Anyone who finds out they can’t eat foods containing gluten anymore often start to think of some of their favorite foods that they won’t be able to eat anymore.  Pizza is often high on the list, especially for kids who have recently been diagnosed with gluten intolerance.  But the good news is that practically any recipe can be made gluten free with a few good recipes and a gluten free pantry stocked with a few basic flours and starches.

There are a lot of recipes available for gluten free pizza crust, or you can simply by a mix.  Bob’s Red Mill makes a great gluten free pizza crust mix.  There are some great new companies that are make some great pizza crust as well like the Gluten Free Bistro out of Colorado.  Both of these companies strive to make healthy gluten free pizza crusts that you can feel good about eating.

One thing that is fun about being forced to make your own crust is that you get fresh pizza dough and fresh pizza that really tastes better.  Once you find a good recipe or mix you will start to love pizza night.  Everyone can personalize mini pizzas with their own toppings or you can make a large pizza for everyone to share.

To make the crust more nutritious try using more nutrient dense flours like almond meal, bean flours, or coconut flour.  This video shows how to make an easy gluten free pizza crust with almond meal.

Decorations for Halloween

Posted in Pasta Recipes by Neil Wasko on September 11, 2011

Every September I start to get excited about planning a great Halloween party for our friends and family. Our children are only 6 and 8 so they are really into Halloween this year. That means that my husband will take them out trick or treating and I’ll be home handing out candy and putting the final touches on our decorations for Halloween.

We want to entertain more than scare our children and their friends so our Halloween props will be more humorous than scary. This year we’ll stick to the basics witches, ghosts, and skeletons. I’m going to get a Halloween door cover that shows a witch slamming into the front door and going splat. Then I’m going to take a real broom and lay it down so it’ll make little ones think again! I’m also going to have a witches cauldron with fake fire to the side of the steps. I’m going to have fake bottles of witch’s potions beside the cauldron for the kids to take home. It’ll just be some water – nothing toxic.

For effect they’ll be a few skeletons with signs around their necks saying Caution don’t drink the witch’s potion and Look what happened to us! And of course well have to have a few friendly ghosts flying through the trees.

I’ll be dressed as a witch with a big witch’s hat and funny shoes as I hand out the Halloween Candy. Of course I’ll have a smaller cauldron for a candy bowl. As the children arrive back at the house, they’ll be able to come in and see tha Halloween witch cake and all of the Halloween snacks.

They’ll have a great time and really enjoy Halloween without getting terribly scared.
