French Rustic Kitchens and Flour Sack Towels

Posted in Kitchen by Jessie Gropp on October 18, 2011

For the last few years I’ve been living and working in a small village in the French countryside.  When I arrived it felt like I’d stepped back a few decades in time.  Everything closes all day Sunday (and at noon on Saturday).  The Internet is dial-up.  The roads are terrible, and I’m always escaping from being run over by tractors.

The old fashioned way of life here can be a little annoying, but there’s one aspect of life here that I have no urge to give up: the kitchen.

My kitchen here is just incredible.  The room itself is enormous, taking up a good portion of the house (the French prioritise well).  There’s a huge range oven against one wall.  A monstrous thick wooden table squats in the middle of the room, constantly loaded with fish waiting to be gutted and poultry waiting to be plucked.  On a row of brass hooks hang a line of flour sack dish towels, each powdered in a layer of flour from the last time they were used to slide a fresh loaf of bread into the oven.

Kitchens these days seem to have become places geared towards speed and convenience.  Gadgets are everywhere, and cookery is soulless.  All I’d say is that you should come see my kitchen in the heart of France.  You’ll fall in love with cookery all over again.

The G&M Restaurant and Lounge Maryland crab cakes were voted the Baltimore’s best crab cakes five years in a row by Baltimore Magazine – 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008! The G&M Restaurant is actually located in Linthicum Heights, Maryland, which is southwest of Baltimore, just north of the BWI International Airport. So you can easily fly in if you need to get some of these gourmet crab cakes.

If you go for dinner the Double Crab Cake Platter is $24.95 and the Single Crab Cake Platter is $16.95. These award-winning crab cakes are made with Jumbo Lump Crabmeat, lightly seasoned, and broiled. If you love all things crab, then you’ll also want to taste their Crab Dip Appetizer ($11.95), Crab Balls (4 for $12.95) or Cream of Crab Soup (Cup for $4.95 or Bowl for  $6.75).

If you fall in love with these crab cakes and think flying into BWI and taking a tax to eat them is a bit steep. Well don’t worry you can order them online and have them shipped directly to you. In fact any order that you place before 6 pm Eastern Standard time, will arrive the next day by FedEx. If you’re family loves seafood and you want a truly special dish for a special celebration then give these a try. A 8-ounch crab cake is only $13.50.

Pulled Pork Pizza Recipe

Posted in Pizza Recipes by Allan Goulding on September 18, 2011

Have you ever thought about using your favorite pulled pork recipe on a pizza? When I first heard of a pulled pork recipe that was served on a pizza crust, I thought it was a bad idea. I don’t know if you remember this, but Pizza Hut came out with a barbecue pizza a few years back, and for a while, it was all the rage in the South. Even though I was reluctant to give it a try, I finally did. I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was!

I’ve made barbecue pizza several times at home, but I usually omit putting cheese on the meat. If you want to add cheese, grated cheddar is a good choice.

Pulled pork pizza

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium refrigerated pizza crust
  • Homemade or bottled barbecue sauce
  • 1 cup pulled pork
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ½ cup diced onion
  • ½ cup diced green bell pepper

Directions: Place pizza crust on metal pizza pan or on pizza stone. Spoon barbecue sauce on pizza crust, almost to edges. Flake pork with a fork and sprinkle on pizza.

In a nonstick skillet, melt butter. Add onion and bell pepper and cook over medium heat until veggies are just tender. Distribute evenly over pulled pork.

Bake pizza according to pizza package directions. Turn on broiler unit to get the pork brown and crisp.

Decorations for Halloween

Posted in Pasta Recipes by Neil Wasko on September 11, 2011

Every September I start to get excited about planning a great Halloween party for our friends and family. Our children are only 6 and 8 so they are really into Halloween this year. That means that my husband will take them out trick or treating and I’ll be home handing out candy and putting the final touches on our decorations for Halloween.

We want to entertain more than scare our children and their friends so our Halloween props will be more humorous than scary. This year we’ll stick to the basics witches, ghosts, and skeletons. I’m going to get a Halloween door cover that shows a witch slamming into the front door and going splat. Then I’m going to take a real broom and lay it down so it’ll make little ones think again! I’m also going to have a witches cauldron with fake fire to the side of the steps. I’m going to have fake bottles of witch’s potions beside the cauldron for the kids to take home. It’ll just be some water – nothing toxic.

For effect they’ll be a few skeletons with signs around their necks saying Caution don’t drink the witch’s potion and Look what happened to us! And of course well have to have a few friendly ghosts flying through the trees.

I’ll be dressed as a witch with a big witch’s hat and funny shoes as I hand out the Halloween Candy. Of course I’ll have a smaller cauldron for a candy bowl. As the children arrive back at the house, they’ll be able to come in and see tha Halloween witch cake and all of the Halloween snacks.

They’ll have a great time and really enjoy Halloween without getting terribly scared.

Inspire Little Cooks With Toys That Make Real Food

Growing up, the toy I most yearned for, the forbidden fruit of the toy store, was the Mr Frosty Icy Treats Maker.

Every year as the weather heated up, the Mr Frosty commercial would be shown on TV and I would start asking for it as a gift for my birthday. And every year I was denied. Fear of mess, stickiness and unhealthy treat eating were all reasons cited for the Mr Frosty withholding.

So I never plucked up the courage to ask for an Easy Bake oven – surely if an ice crusher was not allowed, then a toy oven that really baked would be out of the question.

If you are one of those parents denying your kids a food based toy because it seems to messy, think about the learning opportunities they are missing out on.

Making their own food will teach them confidence in the kitchen, and the joy of providing a treat for someone else.

Hasbro have given the old light-bulb powered oven toy a make over, and now the new Ultimate Easy Bake Oven for 2011 features a real heating element to make real home-baked goods.

The receipes have been jazzed up too, with cup cakes and pizzas part of the range.

This type of toy, that allows the child to take control of the cooking is a huge confidence boost. Whilst cooking with your child can be a joyful and educational activity, though necessity the child will always be following your lead. And recipes can be difficult for children to follow, so instead they will need to follow your instruction.

When you use the Ultimate Easy Bake real baking toy oven, your child can take the lead with confidence as the equipment and recipes are desgined to be used by kids.

Once kids have discovered the joy of creating in the kitchen, they will be more inclined to cook for themselves when they are older, and be inspired to have a varied diet, filled with home-cooking.
