I think the Hornets preferred the magic of Paul to a sign and trade and get guys like Nelson, Ryan Anderson, Richardson (in case of resignation) instead of letting Paul go to the Knicks and leaving nothing like Bron and Bosh had their teams in 2012.
If Paul made it clear he wanted to spend the Hornet would be open to a sign and trade with anyone well enough, since you can not just let Paul walk and get something back for him.
